What is a credit repository?

A credit repository is a company that collects information to provide credit information about individual consumers. Credit issuers provide the repository with the information, including the individual's available credit and payment history. The repository then compiles this information, along with public record information into a file on each consumer. Credit issuers are then able to view consolidated reports about consumers seeking credit.

Who are the three National Credit Repositories?

In the United States, there are three major credit repositories: Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. The three repositories provide national coverage of consumer credit information. Many large, national financial institutions report consumer credit information to all three repositories; however, smaller banks and financial institutions may only report to one of the repositories, or even none. As a result, your credit report from one repository may be slightly different from another.

We are not a national credit repository. We are an information services company and sell credit reports, but we do not gather credit data or maintain a database of credit files. We cannot change your credit file information, as we do not own the database.

Will my spouse's name and information appear on my report?

Credit files are maintained on an individual basis, regardless of current marital status. Although joint accounts with both your name and your spouse's name may appear on your respective credit reports, you and your spouse will each have a separate and unique credit report.

Can I get a credit report on someone else?

We are not authorized to provide credit reports to anyone but the consumer.

When you place your order, you agree to the following:

"Under FCRA laws, any person who knowingly and willfully obtains a credit report under false pretenses shall be fined under title 18, United States Code, imprisoned not more than 2 years, or both."

What is a credit report?

A consumer credit report contains a record of an individual's credit payment history. Credit issuers are permitted by law to review your credit report to determine whether to extend you credit. As the millions of active credit users in the United States pay their bills, most lenders report credit payment information to the three national credit repositories, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Most of the information in your consumer credit report comes directly from the companies you do business with.

Why should I see my credit report?

Your credit report can have a profound impact on your financial stability. With good credit, you can obtain a home mortgage, lease an apartment, obtain an auto loan, or acquire a low interest credit cards with ease. But if your credit history is shaky, many of these financial resources may be more expensive or not available at all. Either way, you have a right to know what to expect when a lender runs a credit check on you.

Aside from paying your bills on time, the single most important thing you can do is to be aware of what your credit report says about you. This will ensure that when others look into your credit history, they will find that you are a safe bet and issue you the credit you are seeking.

It is essential that you check all of your credit files (and monitor your credit regularly) to protect your good credit standing, even if you always pay all your bills on time.

The federal trade commission encourages consumers to check their credit report several times per year to ensure that the report is up-to-date and error free.

How long does information stay on my credit report?

Negative items such as late payments and some public record items will remain on your credit report for 7 years. Chapter 7, 11 and 12 bankruptcies will remain on your credit report for 10 years. Unpaid tax liens remain indefinitely and paid tax liens remain 7 years from the paid date of the lien. Active positive information may remain on the report indefinitely. Hard inquiries remain on your credit report for up to 2 years, while soft inquiries do not show up at all.

What information is not contained in a credit report?

Your credit report does not contain any information about medical history, personal lifestyle, political preference, criminal record, religious information or anything else not directly related to your credit history.

What happens if I enter incorrect information on the order form?

"Under FCRA laws, any person who knowingly and willfully obtains a credit report under false pretenses (for example getting a credit report on an individual without their permission), shall be fined under title 18, United States Code, imprisoned not more than 2 years, or both."

We are not authorized to provide credit reports for anyone else except the consumer directly requesting their credit report. The person whose report was ordered must contact our customer service department at 888-790-7563, Monday through Friday 10:00am-6:00pm Eastern Time.

What is an inquiry?

There are two types of inquiries: soft inquiries, which do not count toward your credit score, and hard inquiries, which may affect your score.

Soft inquiries have absolutely no impact on your credit score. Viewing your own credit report is a soft inquiry. Other inquiries that you do not initiate, such as a review by an existing creditor or an inquiry for the purpose of offering a pre-approved credit card, are also soft inquiries.

Hard inquiries result when you apply for credit and the potential creditor needs to check your credit history. The impact of hard inquiries can vary depending on the overall information in your report. Usually, there are strong indicators of your creditworthiness, such as your payment history and length of credit history, which will carry more weight in determining your score. However, excessive inquiries can raise a red flag that you may be overextended.

What is a good score?

The higher a person's credit score is, the more likely they are to get approved and be offered more favorable borrowing rates.

Where do I go if I need help?

An alert can be triggered from credit changes including change of address, hard inquiries, negative information like late payments, new public record postings, new account openings, and possible fraudulent activity.

What's the difference between a 3-Bureau credit Report and a Single Bureau Credit Report?

A single bureau credit report provides you your credit information from only one of the three major credit repositories.

A 3-Bureau Credit Report provides your credit history as reported by all three national credit repositories, TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian.

The 3-Bureau Credit Report lists your credit accounts, allowing you to compare how each of the three national repositories are reporting your information.

Why is it important to check my credit report from all 3 credit repositories?

The financial information that is contained in your credit report may be different from one repository to another. The three national credit repositories, Experian, TransUnion and Equifax - are independent of each other and do not share or pool information.

The 3-Bureau Credit Report helps you understand how lenders view you, ensure your credit records are accurate and avoid identity theft.

When lenders check your credit history, they can pull your credit report from any of the three repositories. By checking all three yourself, you can be prepared no matter which repository they refer to.

The 3-Bureau Credit Report enables you to find inconsistencies in your credit information, too. While most of the information collected by the three repositories should be the same, discrepancies can occur. The 3-Bureau Credit Report makes it easy to see these inconsistencies across your history and take steps to correct them.

How long will it take to receive my 3-Bureau Credit Report online?

Once you finish the order form, read the disclaimer and submit your order, your online credit report will usually take up to 2 minutes to appear on your screen, depending on several factors such as time of day and your connection speed.

Where can I find out how to read my 3 Bureau Credit Report online?

Dispute Center

If you feel that the credit report you received from TrueAssure contains inaccurate information, you can dispute the information by calling our toll free at 888-790-7563, Monday through Friday 10:00am-6:00pm Eastern Time, and a customer service agent will be able to assist you. Please have your credit report available for reference. Our dispute procedure is as follows:

We will reinvestigate the disputed information free of charge.

We will contact each credit repository that reported the disputed information and notify them of your dispute before the end of the 5th business day beginning on the day that we were notified of your dispute.

In accordance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act, the credit repository is required to contact the provider of the information to investigate and report the results to us by the end of the 30-day period beginning on the date that we received notice of your dispute.

If the investigation finds that the disputed information is inaccurate or incomplete, the information provider must also report the results to all the consumer reporting agencies to which it reported the information and that maintain files on consumers on a nationwide basis.

We will notify you of the results of our reinvestigation by letter within 5 business days after we complete our investigation.

If you have additional information that you believe is relevant to our reinvestigation, please provide it to us any time during the reinvestigation process. We will provide all such relevant information to the information provider. If you provide us with such additional information prior to the time we have completed our reinvestigation, we may extend the period of reinvestigation for up to 15 additional days.

If we cannot verify the disputed information within that time frame, the disputed information will be deleted from your First Advantage credit report or updated as requested.

A revised credit report, reflecting the results of the investigation, will be sent to you at the conclusion of the investigation.

Our credit data is provided by First Advantage. First Advantage is a reseller of credit information provided by the three national repositories. We do not maintain a permanent database from which new credit reports are produced. Rather, each time we prepare a new credit report, we order the information from one or more of the three repositories. Although the repositories are notified of modifications or deletions we make based upon our reinvestigations, you should contact them directly to confirm that these modifications and deletions are reflected in their permanent files. If not, subsequent credit reports they prepare on you may continue to contain the disputed information.

Contacting the Credit Repositories

The repositories can correct any inaccurate information that they may have in their permanent files. Since information reported to the repositories is only as current and as accurate as the information reported by creditor(s), you may want to dispute any inaccurate information by contacting the creditor(s) directly. Further, once you have notified the creditor(s) of the error in writing, the creditor(s) may not continue to report the information if it is, in fact, an error.

You'll usually hear back from the credit repositories in 30 days or less. If the error has been fixed, you can have the credit reporting company send the corrected report to anyone who received the inaccurate report in the past six months (two years in the case of employers). If your dispute is found to be accurate, only the passage of time can assure its removal. Credit repositories are permitted by law to report bankruptcies for 10 years and other negative information for 7 years.
